How to answer "Tell me about a time you failed"

Choose a real failure, own your part and spend most of your answer on what you learned and changed.

Why interviewers ask it

It shows honesty, resilience and whether you learn from mistakes.

How to structure your answer

  1. Set the scene briefly.
  2. Say what went wrong and your part in it.
  3. Say what you did to fix it.
  4. Finish with what you do differently now.

Example answers

Missed deadline

I told a client a report would be ready by Friday without checking with my team. They were already at capacity, and we delivered late. I called the client, apologised and gave a new date. Now I confirm capacity before I commit to anything.

Failed launch

I launched a feature without testing it with real customers. Almost nobody used it. I spoke to ten users, learned the problem was different and rebuilt a smaller version. I now test with users before building.

These are made-up examples to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.

What to avoid

Practise this out loud

Run a mock interview for common interview questions. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
