How to answer "Where do you see yourself in five years?"
You don't need an exact plan. Interviewers want to know that this job fits a direction you care about, and that you'd stay a while.
Why interviewers ask it
They're checking ambition, realism and whether the role can give you what you want.
How to structure your answer
- Say what you want to get better at.
- Describe the kind of responsibility you'd like.
- Connect it to this company.
Example answers
Specialist path
In five years I'd like to be someone the team goes to for hard reliability problems. I want deeper experience with large systems, which is why this role interests me, and I can see how much I'd learn here.
Management path
I'd like to be leading a small team. I've enjoyed mentoring juniors, and I want to get better at it. First I want to become really strong in this role.
These are made-up examples to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.
What to avoid
- Saying you want the interviewer's job.
- Announcing plans to leave or start a company.
- "I don't know."
- Goals with no link to this job.
Practise this out loud
Run a mock interview for common interview questions. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
