How to answer "What are your strengths?"
Adjectives won't convince anyone. Pick strengths this job needs, and prove each one with a quick story.
Why interviewers ask it
They're checking whether you know what you're good at, and whether it's what they need.
How to structure your answer
- Choose two strengths that appear in the job description.
- Give a real example of each.
- Link it to how you'd use it here.
Example answers
Problem solving
I'm good at finding the actual cause of a problem. When our support tickets doubled, I traced most of them to one confusing email and rewrote it with the product team. Tickets dropped back within a fortnight. I'd bring the same habit to your support operation.
Organisation
I keep complicated work moving. In my last role I coordinated a product launch across four teams with one shared plan and a weekly check-in. We launched on the agreed date, which hadn't happened before.
These are made-up examples to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.
What to avoid
- Long lists of adjectives.
- Strengths irrelevant to the job.
- No evidence.
- False modesty.
Practise this out loud
Run a mock interview for common interview questions. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
