How to answer "Why should we hire you?"
This question feels awkward, but it's simply an invitation to sum up your fit. Don't compare yourself with other candidates: match what you've done to what they need.
Why interviewers ask it
It tests whether you've understood the job and can make your own case clearly.
How to structure your answer
- Name the two or three things this job needs most.
- Give proof of each from your experience.
- End with what you'd do for them.
Example answers
Technical role
You need someone who can stabilise on-call and move fast on the platform. I've done both: I cut incidents by a third at my last company and moved 40 services to GitOps. I'd start by learning your biggest sources of pain, and I'd expect to be helping within weeks.
Sales role
You're entering the mid-market and need someone who has built a territory from scratch. I did that twice, reaching 120% of quota in my second year. I also know your buyers, as I've sold to finance teams for five years.
These are made-up examples to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.
What to avoid
- Saying you're a hard worker with no proof.
- Criticising other candidates or your employer.
- Listing every skill you have.
- Sounding unsure of yourself.
Practise this out loud
Run a mock interview for common interview questions. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
