How to answer "Why do you want to work here?"
Interviewers ask this to find out whether you'd stay and care. A good answer shows you've looked into the company and connects it to what you do well.
Why interviewers ask it
Hiring someone is expensive, so they want people who chose this job on purpose. A general answer suggests you'd take anything.
How to structure your answer
- Name something specific about the company: a product, customer, value or recent news.
- Say why it matters to you.
- Connect it to a skill or experience you'd bring.
Example answers
Specific to the product
I've used your app to manage my own finances for two years, and what stands out is how clear it makes complicated things. That's the kind of product I want to work on. In my current role I simplified our onboarding flow and support tickets fell by a fifth, so I think I could add to that here.
Specific to the mission
I read about your work with rural clinics. My mother is a nurse, so I've seen what poor scheduling does to patients. I've spent three years building scheduling software, and I'd rather do that work where it makes a real difference.
These are made-up examples to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.
What to avoid
- Talking only about salary or location.
- Compliments that could apply to any company.
- Repeating the first line of their website.
- Making it only about what you get out of it.
Practise this out loud
Run a mock interview for common interview questions. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
