How to answer "What is your greatest weakness?"
Nobody believes you're a perfectionist who works too hard. Interviewers want an honest, real weakness and proof that you're working on it.
Why interviewers ask it
It tests self-awareness and whether you can improve. People who can't name a weakness are harder to coach.
How to structure your answer
- Choose a real weakness that isn't central to this job.
- Give a short example of it causing a problem.
- Say what you've changed and how it's going.
Example answers
Public speaking
I used to get nervous presenting to senior people, and in one review I rushed through important points. I joined a speaking group and now volunteer to present at our monthly review. I'm still not a natural, but people tell me I'm much clearer now.
Delegation
As a new team lead, I held on to work because it felt faster. It caused a backlog in one project. I now agree on what to hand over at the start of each sprint, and I check in instead of redoing work.
These are made-up examples to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.
What to avoid
- Saying you have no weaknesses.
- Disguising a strength as a weakness.
- Naming a core skill of this job.
- Stopping before you explain what you've changed.
Practise this out loud
Run a mock interview for common interview questions. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
