How to prepare for a job interview
Good preparation comes down to knowing the job, having your stories ready and practising out loud. Reading answers isn't the same as saying them.
Why interviewers ask it
Most candidates read about interviews but don't rehearse them. Saying answers out loud shows up gaps that reading never will.
How to structure your answer
- Read the job description and mark the top five requirements.
- Research the company's product, customers and recent news.
- Prepare five stories that cover achievement, conflict, failure, leadership and teamwork.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with feedback.
- Prepare your questions, and check logistics the day before.
Example answers
A one-week plan
Day one: read the job and research the company. Days two and three: write five stories. Days four and five: run mock interviews and listen back. Day six: prepare questions and go over weak answers. Day seven: rest and check your setup.
If you only have a day
Pick your top three stories, practise "Tell me about yourself" out loud, learn three facts about the company and prepare two questions.
These are made-up examples to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.
What to avoid
- Memorising word-for-word scripts.
- Only preparing technical topics.
- Not testing your camera and microphone.
- Skipping research on who's interviewing you.
Practise this out loud
Run a mock interview for common interview questions. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
