What to ask at the end of an interview
Always have questions. They show interest, and they help you decide whether you actually want the job.
Why interviewers ask it
Interviewers notice people who have thought about the role. It's also your best chance to find out what the job is really like.
How to structure your answer
- Prepare five questions, as some will get answered during the interview.
- Ask about the work, the team and how success is measured.
- Ask what happens next.
Example answers
About the role
What would a great first six months look like in this job? And what's the biggest problem you'd like this person to solve?
About the team
How does the team handle disagreements on priorities? What do you personally like most about working here?
These are made-up examples to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.
What to avoid
- "No, I think you've covered everything."
- Questions answered on their website.
- Opening with pay and holidays in a first interview.
- Anything that sounds like a test.
Practise this out loud
Run a mock interview for common interview questions. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
