A sample answer
Tell me about a customer you saved.
A large client's usage dropped after their sponsor left, and renewal was three months away. I met the new lead, learned their priorities had shifted to reporting, and arranged training for that team. We rebuilt the success plan around it. They renewed, and later added seats.
A made-up example to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.Common mistakes
- Sounding like support only.
- No retention numbers.
- Promising things to please a customer.
- Not knowing the company's product.

Frequently asked questions
Do CSMs carry a sales target?
It depends. Some own renewals or expansion, others don't. Ask in the interview.
Can I move into customer success from support?
Yes, it's a common route. Show examples of understanding customers' goals, not only fixing tickets.
