Project Manager interview questions

Project manager interviews are built on stories. You'll be asked about projects that slipped, stakeholders who disagreed and how you got things back on track.

What interviewers look for

How the interview usually runs

  1. Recruiter call.
  2. Hiring manager interview on past projects.
  3. Scenario interview.
  4. Panel with stakeholders.

Stages vary by company, so ask the recruiter what to expect before you start preparing.

A sample answer

Tell me about a project that went off track.

A system migration was three weeks behind when a vendor missed a delivery. I reviewed what was critical, moved two non-essential reports to a later phase and agreed daily check-ins with the vendor. I told the sponsor straight away, with options. We went live two weeks later than planned instead of two months, and within budget.

A made-up example to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.

Common mistakes

Practise this out loud

Run a mock interview for a Project Manager role. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PMP needed for project manager jobs?

It's helpful in some industries and often not required elsewhere. Check job adverts in your sector. Delivery stories usually count for more in the interview.

What questions should I ask the interviewer?

Ask how projects are approved, who the sponsor is, and what the last project struggled with.
