Product Manager interview questions

Product manager interviews test how you decide what to build. Most questions have no right answer, so interviewers listen for how you frame the problem and weigh options.

What interviewers look for

How the interview usually runs

  1. Recruiter call.
  2. Hiring manager screen.
  3. Product sense and analytical interviews.
  4. Execution and leadership rounds, sometimes with a case presentation.

Stages vary by company, so ask the recruiter what to expect before you start preparing.

A sample answer

Daily users fell 5%. What do you do?

First I'd rule out a tracking problem. Then I'd split the drop by platform and country. In one case, nearly all of it was Android users on a new app version, because a login bug hit people with expired sessions. We shipped a fix within two days, added a crash and login alert, and users recovered the following week.

A made-up example to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.

Common mistakes

Practise this out loud

Run a mock interview for a Product Manager role. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.

Frequently asked questions

Do product managers need technical knowledge?

Enough to discuss trade-offs with engineers. How much depends on the role, and technical PM roles go much deeper.

How do I prepare for product sense questions?

Practise out loud on products you use. Time yourself and always end with a recommendation and a metric.
