A sample answer
Revenue beat budget but profit missed. Why?
I'd split it into price, volume, mix and cost. In one quarter, revenue was 4% over but margin fell. Volume was strong, but most growth came from our lowest-margin product, and freight costs had risen. I showed this on one chart, and the team shifted promotion towards higher-margin lines.
A made-up example to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.Common mistakes
- Reciting formulas with no business meaning.
- Messy Excel in a test.
- Explaining what changed, but not why.
- Not knowing the company's results.
Practise this out loud

Do I need the CFA?
It's useful for some roles, especially in investments. Many corporate finance jobs don't need it.
