Cloud Engineer interview questions
Cloud interviews check that you can design something secure, available and affordable. Knowing service names isn't enough: you'll be asked why you'd choose one option over another.
What interviewers look for
- Architecture. Availability zones, failure and scaling.
- Security. Least privilege and network boundaries.
- Cost. Knowing what things cost and how to reduce it.
How the interview usually runs
- Recruiter call.
- Cloud fundamentals screen.
- Architecture design interview.
- Behavioural round.
Stages vary by company, so ask the recruiter what to expect before you start preparing.
10 Cloud Engineer interview questions, and how to answer them
1. Design a highly available web app.
What they want to see: Core architecture.
How to answer: Use multiple zones, a load balancer, autoscaling, managed database with failover and health checks.
2. Security group or network ACL?
What they want to see: Network basics.
How to answer: Security groups are stateful per instance, ACLs are stateless per subnet.
3. How do you apply least privilege in IAM?
What they want to see: Security habits.
How to answer: Use roles over users, scoped policies, access analysis and no long-lived keys.
4. When would you use serverless?
What they want to see: Choosing compute.
How to answer: For spiky, short work. Compare with containers on cost and cold starts.
5. How do private subnets reach the internet?
What they want to see: Networking depth.
How to answer: Through a NAT gateway, or VPC endpoints to keep traffic private and cut cost.
6. How do you plan disaster recovery?
What they want to see: Reliability planning.
How to answer: Start with RTO and RPO, then choose backups, pilot light or active-active, and test restores.
7. How would you migrate an app to the cloud?
What they want to see: Practical planning.
How to answer: Assess, decide rehost or refactor, move data carefully and plan cutover and rollback.
8. Costs rose 30% last month. What now?
What they want to see: Investigation.
How to answer: Use the cost explorer by service and tag, find the change, then fix and set budgets.
9. How do you manage infrastructure?
What they want to see: Automation.
How to answer: Use Terraform or Bicep with reviews, modules and pipelines.
10. How do you monitor cloud workloads?
What they want to see: Operations.
How to answer: Use metrics, logs and traces with alerts on what users feel.
A sample answer
Costs rose 30% last month. What now?
I'd start in the cost explorer, grouped by service and tag. In a similar case I found data transfer had tripled because a new service talked across regions. We moved it into the same region, added a VPC endpoint for storage traffic and set budget alerts. The bill returned to normal the next month.
A made-up example to show the structure. Use your own experience and real numbers.Common mistakes
- Naming services without explaining why.
- Designing with one availability zone.
- Forgetting cost entirely.
- Never mentioning how you'd test recovery.
Practise this out loud
Run a mock interview for a Cloud Engineer role. Questions change every time, you answer by voice or typing, and each answer gets a score with feedback.
Frequently asked questions
AWS or Azure: which should I prepare for?
Prepare for the one in the job description. The ideas carry over, so explain concepts first and then map them to that provider.
Do cloud engineers need to code?
You need to write infrastructure as code and scripts. Application coding depends on the role.
